5 Types of Blog Posts That Can Help Bring Traffic to Your Blog
There is an endless amount of things you can blog about, as well as endless amounts of ways that you can format or structure your blog posts. The question is, which types of blog posts can help bring in more traffic? Here is a list of 5 different styles of blog posts that you can try on your blog.
1. Tutorials / How to Posts
From my personal experience, one of the best types of blog posts to write if you want a nice flood of traffic, would be a tutorial / how-to blog post. I have done many of these, and they always seem to work. One example was on an older blog of mine where I made a very specific tutorial about how to create templates in Dreamweaver. I was receiving between 200 and 300 extra hits per month from Google just because people were specifically searching for that exact thing! I only had to make the post once, and it brought in long-term traffic with very little effort.
You can write tutorials on almost anything. You can write tutorials on a specific software, on how to use social media websites, or anything else that other people may want to learn how to do. You can even create a video tutorial, and get even more visitors on sites like Youtube. After all, Youtube is now the 2nd biggest search engine, so why not hit it from both angles?
2. Controversial Blog Posts
This one is pretty self explanatory. All you have to do is write about a touchy subject to capture interest. There are 2 ways that I have seen people do this. One way is to write a controversial blog post title just to get people to click, even though you actually have the opposite view in your blog post’s content. It kinda reminds me of those ads that say “John Smith is a Scam!”, and then when you click, it goes to a sales page explaining how he isn’t a scam. Just be careful using this method, because you don’t want to piss people off.
The other way is to actually write a blog post that is controversial all the way through. This can be a rant, or anything. Just be careful not to go too far, and to always support your point of view with FACTS. Don’t just write up something to get peoples blood boiling. In fact, that would be a bad idea. I personally don’t like to be too controversial, but it definitely will help bring traffic if you do it just right.
3.Tips on a Specific Topic
Another type of blog post that will help bring traffic to your blog would be a post that shares tips and / or strategies on a specific topic. An example of this would be tips on how to increase your following on Twitter, or tips on landing the perfect job, etc… These ones are usually easy to write, because you are simply sharing your own knowledge with others. No matter how insignificant you think the tips may be, it may just be what some of your readers were looking for. You should try to share as many tips as you can on subjects that you are knowledgeable about. For instance, I have no problem uploading files with an FTP program, but other people may be clueless! It would probably help out a lot of people if I shared some tips on just that one little topic.
4. “List” Posts
We’ve all seen them. How do I know? Because this is one of them. A list post is simply a list of things related to a specific topic. Some examples are: “The Top 7 Plugins for ____ “ or “5 Things You Must Know About _____” . It doesn’t necessarily have to be in any specific order, but it can be. An example of a specific order list post is something like “The 10 Most Wealthy People in America”. For that one, it would obviously be best to list the richest person in the #1 position, and the 10th richest person in the #10 position. I usually like to write list posts based on my personal experience, but if you can’t, just be sure to do your research first. List posts are very popular among bloggers, because they are easy to write, and they work well for bringing in traffic.
5.Wacky / Crazy Headlines
The title says it all. If your headline makes people do a “double take”, then it’s likely to be clicked. If you do this, just make sure your title can at least somehow work into your article. For example, if your title is: “Breast Milk for School Lunch?” then you could flip it around saying that people are crying like babies about the new school lunch policies, or something to that extent. Yes, that’s an extreme example, but you get the idea. A good place to find headline ideas is Digg.com. You can actually see what people are interested in reading, and may get a few ideas to implement this strategy. It’s not the easiest thing to pull off, but it can help pull in extra traffic to your blog.
These are just a few types of blog posts that you can write to help bring in traffic to your blog. Please share what type of blog posts you have found to be the best traffic pullers in the comments below!

I’d add, “long tail keywords headline posts”, as in: posts where you discuss specific issues that would fall under the long tail “searches”… for example once you’ve written your “5 comment plugins that your blog craves” select the one that is the most searched for and do a full post on it “ReplyMe WordPress Plugin: 7 reasons why your blog needs it”

For sure! I 100% agree Leo, long tail keyword posts are great. Especially if you do a bit of research to find out how many competing pages there are for each specific long tail keyword phrase.

Cool! I have done numbers 1, 3 and 4 and I really enjoy and also get more feedback from tutorials. I try to stay away from controversial posts because I believe it could possibly bite one in the butt later on.
